We have been tutoring children for Kent 11 plus tests for over 40 years, and from our experience. We know that a mix of different approaches can help them prepare, which is why we offer several 11 plus tuition options. Alongside traditional tutoring, we also offer paper courses and mock assessments. Both can be booked as a standalone option or as a complement to weekly tuition with us.
Mock assessments are one-off bookings where your child takes a test produced by us but based on the GL tests. It is sat under exam conditions to help them get insight into what the test may be like. Their results can indicate their strengths and weaknesses and what to focus on during further tuition.
Paper courses are delivered over a number of weeks – you can choose between 16, 12, 8 or 4-week courses. Each week, your child will practice a past paper, go through their answers, and then discuss model answers with the tutor. This is a fantastic way to prepare as children gain a better understanding of what their answers need to include. It also highlights any areas they’re unsure of.
Practising time management
One of the challenges of the 11 plus is answering all the questions within the set time. There are limited opportunities for children to learn this before taking the test, so paper courses can help them practice. They’ll learn how long it should take to answer questions and what it’s like to work under a time pressure.
Familiarity with Kent and Bexley 11 plus tests
Although the papers are not the same as what they’ll be sitting, it can give them an idea of what to expect. Taking the 11 plus can feel daunting as it’s hard to know what to expect, so making sure as much as possible is familiar will help put your child’s mind at ease. The test format is very different from anything they would have experienced at school, so understanding what they’ll be asked and how to answer it will be invaluable.
Dedicated time to prepare
While you can practice papers at home, finding the time or the right environment to concentrate in can be tricky. Having a set day and time each week can help ensure it is completed, and they can learn from the model answers, too.
What the courses involve
Each paper course session will be split into two parts. In the first half of the session, your child will work through a paper (or parts of papers), and in the second half of the session, one of our tutors will go through all of the answers to the questions one by one. Our GL Courses are suitable for Bexley, Kent, and Medway Tests, covering Maths & English and Verbal and Nonverbal/Spatial Reasoning. You can book the courses as 16, 12, 8 or 4-week blocks. The start date for each is available online. Find out more information and book here.
