Choosing a Primary School can be a daunting experience, especially if you’re unsure what to look for. If your child is due to start school next September, you’ll attend open days over the next few months. Here, we share some things to consider when you’re touring potential schools.
Consider how you will travel there
Can you walk to the school from your house or if not, what is the journey like and is there adequate parking? Even short car trips can take much longer during school pick up and drop off times.
Find out about extra-curricular activities
Ask what clubs the school offers, how regular they are, and what trips, sports and arts opportunities are available. Extra-curricular activities can be a big part of your child’s school experience, so it’s important to factor them into your decision when choosing a Primary School.
Explore the school’s policies on behaviour and learning
Make sure you’re comfortable with how the school approaches behaviour and learning, as managing behaviour works best when you can support it at home. Different schools approach the curriculum in different ways, so finding a method that suits your child can be helpful. Most policies can be found online on the school’s website.
Check the wraparound care options
If you need a breakfast or afterschool club, find out whether the schools you are looking at provide this. Times and prices often vary from school to school, so it’s worth checking before choosing a Primary School.
Find recent Ofsted reports
While the school’s most recent Ofsted report certainly shouldn’t be the only thing you factor in, it will indicate some of the school’s key strengths and weaknesses. You can find the latest report on the school’s website. Remember that it could have changed significantly since its last report.
Compare local schools
Even if you know where you would like to apply for your child, it is still worth looking at other schools to compare and get a feel for what you or your child may like. It’s also helpful to think carefully about second and third-choice schools if you don’t get into your first choice.
