Throughout the 2007-2008 school year parents, pupils and teachers alike waited anxiously for the change of date and content of the 11+ examination. In the event it was only the date that changed. The Kent Tests consist of Mathematics, English, Verbal reasoning and Non verbal reasoning. They will be held in September.
“Non verbal reasoning is a test of the ability to recognise similarities, analogies and patterns in unfamiliar designs.” These reasoning processes are fundamental to a person’s ability to understand new information, relate it to what they already know and apply it suitably to new situations. Language knowledge does not play a significant part on the results, providing the initial instructions have been understood.
“Verbal reasoning tests yield useful information about pupils’ abilities which may not be evident from their usual classroom work.” Verbal reasoning tests give a strong indication as to how well an individual will cope with new concepts and ideas across a wide range of school subjects. Children with reading problems or who are not fully fluent with the English language may sometimes be at a disadvantage when attempting Verbal reasoning tests.
The Extra Tuition Centre holds 11+ Courses during the Summer Holidays.
Mrs Drury, who runs the courses, explained that children attending the courses seemed to benefit from meeting bright children from other schools. The children also enjoy the intensive nature of the courses because they are able to measure themselves against others of similar abilities.
